Prof Frank Coffey

Consultant in Emergency Medicine

Frank is an Emergency Medicine Physician at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, where he heads an academic unit, DREEAM (Department of Research and Education in Emergency medicine, Acute medicine and Major trauma).  He has extensive experience in healthcare education and in the development of a blended, multi-professional workforce.  He was ED Head of Service through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Frank is an Honorary Professor at Nottingham Trent University and is Clinical Director for the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) at the University of Nottingham, a programme he developed in 2006, recognized as one of the best in the UK.  Frank was the first ‘Educator in Residence’ at his alma mater, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in Dublin, and, following a year long tenure there in 2015, was appointed Visiting Professor. 

Frank’s clinical, teaching and research interests include trauma, sports medicine, pain management, health improvement /prevention, medical education and simulation. He leads the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) ‘Trauma and Emergency Care’ specialty group in the East Midlands.  He is also the medical lead for ACP at Nottingham University Hospitals, and chairman of the Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System (ICS) ACP Steering Group.  Frank is passionate about addressing inequality and the wider determinants of health, and is increasingly pushing the prevention agenda.  He chairs the Urgent and Emergency Care (UEC) Health Improvement (HI) Collaborative Steering Group and founded the UEC Health Improvement Hub in DREEAM, where practitioners can collaborate, share good practice and integrate services. 

Frank has worked as a pitch-side doctor at Nottingham Forest FC since 2000 and is still celebrating their recent promotion to the Premier League! He is father to 5 boys who share his love of football, music, travel and the ‘craic’.
