Course Overview

International paediatric course with illness, trauma and cardiac resuscitation education using a combination of lectures, skill sessions, simulations and team work.  

This two-day course was developed in response to the need for a multidisciplinary approach to the seriously ill or injured child. The course brings all elements of paediatric medicine together using lectures, simulation and targeted skill teaching. Candidates arrive prepared following online VLE learning and have access to the 7th Edition APLS manual to consolidate their learning. The course contains technical and non-technical skills with an emphasis on human factors and feedback to optimise the care that children receive in clinical practice.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course, candidates should feel confident using a structured approach to assess and resuscitate seriously ill and injured children, and those in cardiac arrest.

Who will benefit:

  • The APLS course provides the knowledge and skills necessary for recognition and effective treatment and stabilisation of children with life threatening emergencies, using a structured, sequential approach. The course is taught, and it's principles, are practised throughout the world, with over 83,000 candidates who have completed the course since its inception in 1993.
  • Candidates who have taken the course include Consultants, Trainees, Nurses, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Resuscitation Training Officers from Accident & Emergency, Anaesthetic and Paediatric departments. It is a two-day course designed for clinicians and nurses working in paediatric specialities. It is recommended that you have completed paediatric basic life support prior to the APLS course.

Start and finish times:

Day 1: 08:00 – 18:30 approximately

You will work in a group of 6 and following specific lectures, you will take the role of team leader or team member during simulation workshops, each focussing on specific areas related to paediatric life support, getting more challenging as the course progresses. 

The course uses continuous assessment throughout the course, with positive and constructive feedback throughout the two days. You will be assessed on skills, team leadership, team membership and the delivery of feedback. There is no formal assessment or written exam at the end of the course. Feedback on your performance will be given throughout the days. 

Throughout the course you will be supported by a personal mentor. They will meet with you each day and are there to support you. They will also feed back to you from the faculty meeting discussions that take place at regular intervals during the two days. 

In preparation for your course, and for future reference, you will receive the 7th Edition course manual, which is also accessible online. You will be sent  a code to access the VLE learning materials online and you are expected to complete this assessment before attending the face to face course.
