Friday Immersive Learning Medical Simulation (FILMS)

FILMS - Friday Immersive Learning Medical Simulation with Microsoft holoLens and Holopatient on GIGXR platform allow students to engage in an augmented reality simulated learning environment as a way to better grasp the complexities of the rarer, sensitive and less frequently seen cases within the curriculum they are studying. For example , domestic violence, Covid 19, etc. These simulations provide a unique and hands-on approach to learning because they require students to actively participate in the immersive experience in order to fully understand the subject matter better when practiced repeatedly

In a typical immersive learning simulation (FILMS), students are placed in a hybrid - physical environment and virtual (holograms) patients are introduced and Learners can interact with the holographic patient - observe, clinically reason and diagnose. Furthermore, they would be able to see virtual images and the real world around them which gives opportunity to prescribe, interpret bedside tests, review images etc. This helps students to understand how certain complex conditions can be treated collaboratively and it removes the element of fear of ‘looking bad’ which sometimes occurs with standardised patients.

Moreover, immersive learning simulations give students an opportunity to practice their skills in a safe environment before applying them to real-world situations. By allowing students to interact with virtual elements, these simulations give students a better understanding of how to act and what to expect when facing certain situations. This way, students can be better prepared for their actual courses when it comes to understanding the material and applying the knowledge to their lives.

Finally, our immersive learning simulations are great tools for teachers as they allow them to assess student skills more effectively. Students can be given time-limited exercises with multiple patient cases (within a short time frame) that must be diagnosed and treated  within a specific timeframe. Teachers can also assess student achievement at different points so they can track their overall progress. With this data, they can adjust their teaching methods accordingly to ensure students are fully engaged and learning the necessary material.

Overall, our immersive learning simulations are effective tools for both students and teachers. Not only do they provide an exciting, engaging and realistic experience, they also allow teachers to effectively assess student progress, ensuring they are receiving the best education possible.
