This multicentre  study was aimed at assessing the diagnostic accuracy of the Randox point of care Multiplex PCR test in critically ill patients with suspected sepsis. Enrolling 4501 patients in Adult Intensive Care Units in the UK over a 21 month period, they directly compared blood samples for the point of care test with conventional blood cultures. The study aims to see if the point of care device can give accurate information on the organism grown within one hour, rather than waiting up to 72 hours for blood culture results, if this is successful then this could have potential positive time and cost implications for the NHS. We are currently waiting for the results to be published.
